Reading Mastery is an intensice, highly structured programmed instructional system
features step by step instruction for
phonemic awareness
decoding
comprehension
Students are grouped according to their current ablilities with no more than 5 students in a group.
Each day one 30 minute lesson is presented
The manual specifies the sequence of presentation as well as statement and hand movements
Each student receives positive reinforcement for correct responses
A student who masters skills (indicated by performance on tests) changes groups.
The system uses synthetic phonics approach and emphasizes basic decoding skills including:
sound-symbol identification
left-to-right sequence
oral blending sound
Program teaches students to concentrate on important sound combinations and word discriminations and use a variety of word attack skills
Level I- students learn how to read words, sentences and stories both aloud and silently and answer literal comprehension questions about the readings
Level II- expands basic reading skills, and students learn strategies for decoding difficult words and for answering interpretive comprehension questions

Corrective Reading- advanced remedial reading program designed for students in 3rd grade through adult age who have not mastered decoding or comprehension skills
Program is divded into two strans, decoding and comprehension, and each has 4 instructional levels
Decoding includes:
word-attack basics
decoding strategies
skill applications
Comprehension includes:
thinking basics
comprehension skills
concept applications
Each lesson lasts 45 minutes
Instructional routines include:
direct teaching
teacher modeling and demonstration
independant practice and application with corrective feedback
